This article is about the country. For the pre-1967 Confederacy of Edofasia, see West Edofasia. For the state that existed from 1783 to 1968, see East Edofasia.

Edofasia (Edofasian: Éidobhasia), formally the Confederacy of Edofasia (Edofasian: Cónaidhm na hÉidobhasia) is a Terran nation located in the Heartlands of North Terra. It shares land borders with Novmir to the north, Alayka to the west, and Sudardes to the south. Its western and southern borders are shaped by the peaks of the steep mountains that line them. Northern Edofasia is coated in dense pine forests, separated from the grasslands in the south by the Great Lakes.

Edofasia is the origin of the Faith of A'ru. The First Hold Temple in the west is where the Horator resides and Ordinators are trained. Until 1916 the Horator was the only central authority in the nation. More recently, Edofasia was a Candanadian colony and crown dominion. Between the two Edofasian Crises (1916-1967), the country was split down the middle into its eastern and western halves, with the west being the independent Edofasian state and the east remaining under Candanadian control, the population of the latter being subjected to a high degree of ethnic and cultural discrimination during the occupation leading to considerable civil strife. Edofasia was reunited in 1967 following the resolution of the Tara Insurgencies, the Second Edofasian Crisis and the handover of East Edofasia.

The capital of Edofasia is Scarlao, a very traditional city in the west. Thüle is Edofasia's largest city and also the former capital of East Edofasia, which has kept its Candanadian name. It is home to a diverse population which includes Kaltachians, including Akareans, Kanadiaans and Oseanians. It is the primary port of trade for Edofasia and the base for the Edofasian National Navy Eastern Fleet. Much of the east coast of Edofasia is dotted with Candanadian-style towns established during the occupation. Cold Harbour and Tara are also important cities to Edofasian culture and the Edofasian economy.

Edofasia is one of the founding members of the Terran Commonwealth and remains a leading power in the TC today.

Edofasia has a large agriculture sector, particularly in the south.

Etymology

History

Edofasian inhabitance of Terra can be traced back to before Year Zero. Religious tradition holds that the area that would come to be known as "Terra" was selected by the Gods as the site for the genesis of all humanity on this planet, but when humanity failed to live up to their expectations, the Gods were set to eliminate them. Archeological evidence suggests a long dark age after Year Zero, with cities abandoned and populations decimated. Edofasian clans would often battle their neighbors for land and resources but rarely fought amongst one another. No central Edofasian authority arose aside from The Temple and The Horator. Often times when the group size of perspective Horators was low, Ordinators would raid surrounding territories and kidnap the youngest children, pressing them into the service of The Temple.

The Clan Era (500-1913)

Edofasia was divided among several Clans. Notable among them were the Cenaesii famous for their vast vineyards and wines, as well as their skill as engineers and smiths. the Severii are a Clan who live in the Northwesternmost part of Edofasia*(area is disputed territory, see Lakdan Conflict for more info) who traditionally held strong ties to The Temple and contributed heavily to the legions of Ordinators. During the Candanadian colonization, Easternmost clans attempt first to have peaceful co-habitation with the settlers. However, differences in culture, namely concepts around private ownership of land and the concept of social class led to inevitable conflict. As the Candanadians pushed west, many Edofasian clans retreated or were broken. By the early 1900s almost all of Edofasia was under the control of the Candanadian government. In 1913 the remaining Clans, and The Temple agreed to the Pact of The First Council unifying their lands and militas into a confederation. This resulted in what would become known as the First War of Unification by the Edofasians and the First Edofasian Crises by the Candanadians.

The First War of Unification (1913-1916)

Edofasian forces, now organized as the Edofasian National Army or ENA, first secured their positions in their strongholds of Scarlao and Cold Harbour. Aid began to trickle in from the outside world, namely Akarea and to lesser extent Novmir. These forces were far more organized than the Ordinators or Clan militas that the Candanadians were used to dealing with, after several years of raids, village burnings and guerrilla conflict. The Candanadian government would set up the Line of Control, surrendering the western third of Edofasia but refusing to recognize it as an independent state. West Edofasia or the Edofasian Free State halted its official attacks, exhausted from the conflict and seeking to industrialize would set about soliciting external assistance in state building

Edofasian Insurgency and The Battle of Tara (1937-1944)

With the rise of True Northern Front to power in Candanadium oppression of Edofasians living in the east rose as well. Edofasians were restricted from public spaces, their language and culture suppressed, and concerns arose over whether the King of Candanadium would soon claim to be "King of Edofasia" in lieu of "King in Edofasia." Though unfounded, these concerns and the strictness of the TNF resulted in the government in Scarlao supporting various Edofasian Unity groups in the east as well as outside the borders of Edofasia. Car bombings, assassinations, and paramilitary conflict resulted in rising tensions until finally, in 1944 the ENA was ordered to capture the city of Tara. Tara is an industrial city situated along the Line of Control and if it could be seized, the Line of Control would collapse and the gates to the Great Lakes region would be open. ENA troops assaulted the city and seized a few key buildings, but the expected civilian uprising failed to manifest in great enough numbers and the ENA soon found itself surrounded. The government in Scarlao refused to retreat and vicious street to street fighting ensued. Unwilling to use airstrikes or artillery against what they saw as their own people, ENA forces were crushed and those who survived left the territory, resulting in a status quo ante bellum.

The Second War of Unification (1966-1968)

Dealing with multiple other conflicts nearer to home, The TNF had shifted CSF forces away from the Line of Control. Believing the Edofasian forces to be nothing more than a rabble of volunteers, they had little fear of a serious attack. This belief was shattered when Edofasian National Air Force or ENAF strike teams began bombing defensive positions along the border, opening them up to armored assault by the ENA, cities like Tara were surrounded and bypassed while ENA forces pushed deep into East Edofasia. The CSF defensive was hampered heavily by lack of support, both from local civilians and the TNF administration. Attempts to reinforce the front were met with insurgent ambushes along the roads and railways being targeted by Edofasian sappers. By November, ENA and various militia forces had surrounded the city of Thüle, capital of The Dominion of Edofasia. Despite having learned from the horrors of The Battle of Tara, Scarlao hesitated before launching an assault upon the city. This hesitation led to most of the militia forces committing themselves to a city-wide assault that was met with a strong CSF response. The ENA took many casualties in the attempts to rescue these militia forces, still not committing their air power out of fear of civilian casualties among the Edofasian citizens. The Scarlao government called for a parlay to discuss the peaceful surrender of the Dominion government. Diplomats arrived in New Konigstadt to begin the talks. The TNF was loathe to truly discuss terms with the Edofasian delegation, dragging their feet over the fate of the Dominions military assets. Finally, however. Terms were reached when Edofasia promised equal rights for all citizens and the right of return for anyone wishing to go to Kaltachia. On December 16, 1967, The Magnarplatz Palace Agreement came into effect with the final handover of administration of all Edofasia happening on the first day of 1968 thus ending centuries of conflict.

Geography

Government & Politics

The Government of Edofasia was formed in 1916. Before then numerous Clans controlled tracts of shared land. Facing complete colonization. These clans switched from independent resistance and turned instead to the idea of unity, agreeing to form a Confederation to better defend their collective homeland.

The Edofasian Unity Party holds elections every 4 years to elect representatives for the National Tribunal. This Tribunal is headed by a Chairman/Chairwoman who holds executive powers.

Beyond the central government, the Labour Unions of Edofasia hold considerable power. These unions form Spokes Councils in their regions to discuss local problems. These problems are then brought to the local Representative of the EUP . If the concerns are not addressed to a satisfactory level, unions will call for collective action such as strikes and protests. Unions often have fully commissioned militias that coexist with and sometimes stand in for or in resistance against national police.

The Temple, while having considerable social power in Edofasia, has no official governing ability. However its Ordinators often join the military should they choose to leave the Order after the age of 18.

Culture

Religion

Main article: Faith of A'ru

The religion of Edofasia is the Faith of A'ru. The faiths of many other Terran nations are based on or have evolved from the Faith of A'ru, particularly those of Mortasia and Sudardes. Cenaesia worships the same Pantheon but with a different head deity.

The Faith of A'ru is led by the Horator, except when the individual due to become the next Horator is too young or not yet determined, in which cases the High Priest of Scarlao holds the powers instead. Until 1916, the only central authority in Edofasia was that of the Horator. As such, many led the nation in times of war or strife.

The Ordinators are the masked warriors of the Faith of A'ru. Historically these would have been individuals with Horator candidacy in their youth, but had failed the trials; In contemporary practice of the Faith they are an enlisted religious militia. Orators are tasked with guarding the Faith and its temples, in service to the Horator. The Ordinators were amongst the first to violently resist the colonisation of Edofasia, forming the backbone of many resistance groups and eventually the ENA itself. The distinctive physical appearance of the Ordinators owes to their face masks which are modelled after the First Horator's face.
